Dr. Samuel Wheeler is the tenth State Historian in Illinois history.  He specializes in the history of Illinois, the Civil War Era, and the Life and Legacy of Abraham Lincoln.    

Over the last sixteen years, he has worked in the field of Public History assisting museums, historic sites, documentary editing projects, and historical societies execute their missions effectively and efficiently.  He regularly speaks to audiences across the country, writes for scholarly journals and popular magazines, and offers commentary to newspaper, radio, and television outlets.

As the Illinois State Historian, Dr. Wheeler serves as the historian of record for the state's 56 historic sites managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and is the Director of Research and Collections at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois.
